Zusammenfassung: Die Max-Planck-Gesellschaft (MPG) unterst�tzt gleichrangig den Goldenen und den Gr�nen Weg zu Open Access praktisch und politisch nachhaltig.
Im Kontext des Gr�nen Wegs betreibt sie mit eDoc ein zentrales institutionelles Repositorium f�r die MPG. Die gleichnamige Software hierzu ist eine Eigenentwicklung. Aufbauend auf den Erfahrungen und W�nschen der Nutzer wird derzeit eine neue Anwendung (PubMan) basierend auf dem eSciDoc Framework institutsweise eingef�hrt. eSciDoc ist ein Kooperationsprojekt mit dem FIZ Karlsruhe und wird vom BMBF bis 2009 gef�rdert. S�mtliche Anwendungen und Services k�nnen als Open Source-Produkt kostenfrei nachgenutzt und weiterentwickelt werden.
Neben der Entwicklung und dem Betrieb technischer Infrastrukturen wird der Gr�ne Weg an der MPG durch die direkte und indirekte personelle Unterst�tzung der Wissenschaftler beim Publikationsprozess gef�rdert. In diesem Zusammenhang spielt auch der enge Austausch zwischen den einzelnen Max-Planck-Instituten, der Max Planck Digital Library und weiteren nationalen und internationalen Partnern eine wichtige Rolle.
Mit der Berliner Erkl�rung von 2003 und aktuell der Schwerpunktinitiative “Digitale Information” der Wissenschaftsallianz wird dieses Engagement f�r Open Access auch politisch vertreten.
In diesem Artikel werden neben eDoc bzw. PubMan die Open Access-Politik der MPG unter besonderer Ber�cksichtigung der Aktivit�ten im Bereich des Gr�nen Weges vorgestellt und erl�utert.

Christoph BRUCH, Anja LENGENFELDER: Support of the Green Road to Open Access within the Max Planck Society

Abstract: The Max Planck Society (Max-Planck-Gesellschaft; MPG) with equal weight supports both the Golden and Green Road to Open Access in practice and politically in a sustainable way.
In the context of the Green Road it runs with eDoc a central institutional repository for the MPG. The software of the same name is an in-house development. Based on the experiences and wishes of the users, currently, a new application (PubMan) which is built upon the eSciDoc framework is introduced within the institutes. eSciDoc is a co-operation with the FIZ Karlsruhe and is funded until 2009 by the BMBF. All applications and services are Open Source and can therefore be re-used and be further developed.
Apart from the development and maintenance of technical infrastructures, the Green Road within the MPG is furthered via direct and indirect personal support for scientists during the publication process.
In this regard the close exchange between single Max Planck Institutes, the Max Planck Digital Library and other national and international partners plays an important role.
With the Berlin Declaration in 2003 and currently in the Priority Initiative �Digital Information� of the Alliance of the German Research Organizations this commitment for Open Access is also politically represented.
In this article are introduced and explained both eDoc and PubMan respectively as well as the Open Access Policy of the MPG with a special focus on the activities within the Green Road.

Zusammenfassung: Mit der zunehmenden Umsetzung der Open-Access-Idee entstehen in der deutschen wie der internationalen Forschungslandschaft neue Modelle der wissenschaftlichen Informationsversorgung und der Wissenschaftskommunikation. So betreiben inzwischen �ber die H�lfte der forschungsorientierten deutschen Universit�ten ein institutionelles Repositorium. Open-Access-Repositorien bieten damit perspektivisch eine ideale Basisinfrastruktur f�r den Umgang mit wissenschaftlichen Publikationen: weltweite Zug�nglichkeit, verbesserte Sichtbarkeit, zudem Mehrwertdienste wie fachliche und fach�bergreifende Recherche-Optionen, Nutzungsstatistiken und Zitationsanalysen. Der Beitrag gibt einen aktuellen �berblick und zeigt die derzeitigen Rahmenbedingungen und Entwicklungen, aber auch Entwicklungshindernisse der deutschen Repositorienlandschaft auf. Zugleich werden Initiativen einbezogen, die Verlage, Autoren und allgemein Informationsanbieter an Praktiken des Open Access heranf�hren.

Abstract: The increasing implementation of the Open Access idea has given rise to new scholarly information-supply and communication models in both the German and international research landscapes. For example, over half the research-oriented universities in Germany now operate their own institutional repository. In the long term, Open Access repositories represent an ideal basic infrastructure for handling scholarly publications since they offer worldwide accessibility, enhanced visibility and value-added services such as disciplinary and cross-disciplinary search options, usage statistics and citation analysis. This contribution provides an up-to-date overview and describes not only the current framework conditions and developments but also the barriers to development in the German repository landscape. It also deals with initiatives designed to introduce publishers, authors and general information providers to Open Access practices.

Eine der meistgelesenen Blog Posts dieser Tage �ber die Zukunft des wissenschaftlichen Publikationswesens ist Michael Nielsen’s Is scientific publishing about to be disrupted?. Im wesentlichen vergleicht er den gegenw�rtigen Zustand der Publishign Industry mit dem der Zeitungsindustrie vor 5-10 Jahren und prophezeit damit ein Versagen der Verlags-Dinosaurier und die �bernahme durch flinke Start-ups. Hier folgen ein paar lose verkn�pfte Zitate, um ihnen Apetitt auf den (langen) Rest zu machen (Fettdruck durch mich):

In conversations with editors I repeatedly encounter the same pattern: �But idea X won�t work / shouldn�t be allowed / is bad because of Y.� Well, okay. So what? If you�re right, you�ll be intellectually vindicated, and can take a bow. If you�re wrong, your company may not exist in ten years. Whether you�re right or not is not the point. When new technologies are being developed, the organizations that win are those that aggressively take risks, put visionary technologists in key decision-making positions, attain a deep organizational mastery of the relevant technologies, and, in most cases, make a lot of mistakes. Being wrong is a feature, not a bug, if it helps you evolve a model that works: you start out with an idea that�s just plain wrong, but that contains the seed of a better idea. You improve it, and you�re only somewhat wrong. You improve it again, and you end up the only game in town. Unfortunately, few scientific publishers are attempting to become technology-driven in this way. The only major examples I know of are Nature Publishing Group (with Nature.com) and the Public Library of Science.

- A great search engine for science
- High-quality tools for real-time collaboration by scientists
- Scientific blogging and wiki platforms
- The data web

What I will do instead is draw your attention to a striking difference between today�s scientific publishing landscape, and the landscape of ten years ago. What�s new today is the flourishing of an ecosystem of startups that are experimenting with new ways of communicating research, some radically different to conventional journals. Consider Chemspider, consider startups like SciVee (YouTube for scientists), the Public Library of Science, the Journal of Visualized Experiments, vibrant community sites like OpenWetWare and the Alzheimer Research Forum, and dozens more. And then there are companies like Wordpress, Friendfeed, and Wikimedia, that weren�t started with science in mind, but which are increasingly helping scientists communicate their research. [...] Let�s look up close at one element of this flourishing ecosystem: the gradual rise of science blogs as a serious medium for research. [...] This flourishing ecosystem of startups is just one sign that scientific publishing is moving from being a production industry to a technology industry. A second sign of this move is that the nature of information is changing. Until the late 20th century, information was a static entity. The natural way for publishers in all media to add value was through production and distribution, and so they employed people skilled in those tasks, and in supporting tasks like sales and marketing. But the cost of distributing information has now dropped almost to zero, and production and content costs have also dropped radically. At the same time, the world�s information is now rapidly being put into a single, active network, where it can wake up and come alive. The result is that the people who add the most value to information are no longer the people who do production and distribution. Instead, it�s the technology people, the programmers.

Global economic downturn will affect scientific societies

Andrew Spong macht sich in Societies deliver the value. Publishers value the delivery. Gedanken zu einer Studie von Wiley-Blackwell �ber “global economic downturn affecting scientific societies”.

Today, Wiley-Blackwell has published the results of a survey undertaken earlier this year of �47 officers from scholarly and professional societies ranging in size from less than 500 members to more than 25,000, and from a variety of subject disciplines,� the majority of whom are �based in Europe and the United States�.

Remember: you are the expert scientists. Publishers are just expert publishers. Scientific societies can be publishers; publishers cannot be scientists. It is the societies that deliver the value; publishers merely value the delivery, and their organizational immune system may prevent them from ever adequately supporting the local optimum that your scientific reputation possesses, and could be holding back the local optimum you may go on to achieve as publishers in your own right.

Abstract submission instructions

1. Both EAHIL members and non-members may submit abstracts. EAHIL

Unter der �berschrift Deutschen droht h�here Mehrwertsteuer berichtet der Spiegel Online �ber Informationen der “Bild”-Zeitung, nach denen die Union nach der Wahl eine Mehrwertsteuererh�hung erw�gt. Der erm��igte Satz, der vor allem f�r Lebensmittel, Wildpferde, Schnittblumen und eben auch B�cher gilt, k�nnte demnach von sieben auf 19 Prozent steigen. Bibliotheken w�rden dadurch erhebliche Kaufkraftverluste entstehen. Mir fehlt der �berblick, ob dem Regelungen der EU entgegen stehen (Herr K�mper, wissen Sie mehr?).

The point is that mainstream scholarship (Nature Chemistry is certainly an example of that) is able and willing to use Web2.0 references when these are the most appropriate.

There are very few examples of mindblowingly original ideas. People working in related areas tend to come up with similar ideas. In a world where any of your competitors can blog their ideas as soon as they think of them, hoarding ideas might be the more dangerous choice.

It doesn’t matter what you think about the professional status of blogs. It doesn’t matter most scientists don’t blog. The only thing that matters is that at least one of your competitors is willing to blog their research and that the traditional journals in your field are willing to accept blog posts (and other Web2.0 publication formats) as valid references.

Was “Open Access” kostet - FAZ-Argumentation f�r Steuerzahler

Uwe Jochum, Was “Open Access” kostet: Eine Bitte an den Steuerzahler, genau hinzuschauen. FAZ Mi 17. Juni 2009, Nr. 137, S. N 5 in Natur u. Wissenschaft (nicht online).

Seit August 2007 ist klar, dass “Open Access”, die Einstellung aller wissenschaftlichen Texte auf Internet-Plattformen, das wissenschaftliche Publizieren nicht billiger macht. Denn damals k�ndigten die Kline Science Library und die Cushing/Whitney Medical Library, die zum Bibliothekssystem der Universit�t Yale geh�ren, ihre Mitgliedschaft bei “BioMed Central” (BMC), der gro�en und kommerziell erfolgreichen Open-Access-Plattform. Dieser Schritt sorgte unter den Anh�ngern des elektronischen Publizierens f�r Verbl�ffung. Yale machte �ffentlich, dass man sich von Seiten der Bibliothek an BMC erst dann wieder beteiligen wolle, wenn dort ein “gangbares Gesch�ftsmodell” vorgelegt w�rde. Damit hatte sich in Yale bewahrheitet, was eine an der Medizinischen Universit�t Wien ein Jahr zuvor unternommene Studie - http://www.egms.de/pdf/journals/mbi/2007-6/mbi000050.pdf - erhoben hatte: Open Access bringt f�r die Zeitschriftenetats der Bibliotheken keine Entlastung, ganz im Gegenteil.

Was mich besonders aufmerken l��t, ist die Zitierung eines Artikels aus eGMS. Bei diesen Berechnungen wird aber leider immer wieder vergessen, dass die H�lfte aller OA-Journals keine Autorengeb�hren verlangt (Jochum wei� dies, zitiert aber trotzdem die Studien). Die in diesem Zusammenhang auch immer wieder gerne zitierte Cornell-Studie ist ebenfalls �berholt, stattdessen sollte man lieber zu vern�nftigen Untersuchungen wie OA would save the Netherlands 133 million Euros/year greifen.

Und Jochum wei� auch genau, warum Yale bei BioMed Central ausgestiegen ist:

Der Grund: In Yale arbeiten alleine an der School of Medicine 1849 Wissenschaftler. M�sste Yale jedem von ihnen pro Jahr auch nur einen Beitrag bei BMC finanzieren, w�rden rund 2,5 Millionen Dollar f�llig werden.

Tats�chlich w�rde Yale gerne wieder bei BMC einsteigen, wie aus der Presseerkl�rung klar hervorgeht:
We believe in the widest possible access to scholarly research supported by workable business models and should BioMedCentral develop a viable economic model which allows them to more equitably share costs across all interested stakeholders, we would consider renewing our financial support�.

Yale hat es schlicht und einfach nicht geschafft, innerhalb der Uni rechtzeitig ein nachhaltiges Modell zu entwickeln, wie z.B. einen gemeinsamen Budgettopf zusammen mit Forschern und Forschungsf�rderern, siehe die Uni Nottingham.

Jetzt wird’s ganz kryptisch, denn Jochum - ungetr�bt von irgendwelcher Evidenz - f�ngt an zu rechnen, das den Milchm�dchen die Haare zu Berge stehen:

Geht man nun davon aus, dass Open Access ein Publikationsmodell f�r alle Wissenschaften werden soll, f�r s�mtliche 175 000 Wissenschaftler, die die Deutsche Bildungsstatistik f�r das Jahr 2007 z�hlt, Open-Access-Ver�ffentlichungen finanzieren. Fallen dabei kostenwahre Geb�hren wie bei PLoS an, muss der Steuerzahler f�r eine Publikation pro deutschem Wissenschaftler einen Betrag von 316 Millionen Euro bereitstellen. Bei zwei Publikationen werden 632 Millionen Euro f�llig, bei drei Ver�ffentlichungen sind wir dann schon knapp unter einer Milliarde Euro.

Dabei betragen die Kosten f�r das gesamte weltweite Publikationswesen laut Velterop ca. 7 Mia. Euro, die bei einer Umstellung auf Open Access nur in andere Kan�le fliessen m��ten. Bei 30% Profitabsch�pfung durch kommerzielle Verlage k�nnte ich mir auch eine deutliche Einsparung vorstellen.

Au�erdem redet Jochum einer vollkommen l�cherlichen Konkurrenz zwischen Open Access / Wiss. Bibliothekswesen das Wort, als wenn man nur jeweils eins haben k�nnte und eine Entscheidung f�r Open Access eine gegen das Bibliothekswesen sein m��te. Gegen das Bibliothekswesen in der jetzigen Form vielleicht, aber ist das �berhaupt eine lebensf�hige Alternative, sich von diesen Entwicklungen abzukoppeln?

Jochum spricht die m.E. wichtigen Themen alle nicht an: Zeitschriftenkrise? Nie geh�rt! Wirtschaftskrise und reduzierte Bibliotheksetats inkl. massenhaften Abbstellungen am Horizont? Was schert mich das! Paradigmenwechsel und zuk�nftige Ausrichtung bei Bibliotheken? Nein, ich lebe lieber in der Vergangenheit!

Die B�cher sind wohlbehalten angekommen; die Stevenson-Ausgabe ist so sch�n, da� sie mein B�cherregal aus Orangenkisten besch�mt. Ich f�rchte mich fast davor, solche schweren cremefarbenen Velinseiten anzufassen. Da ich an das kalte Papier und an die steifen Pappumschl�ge amerikanischer B�cher gew�hnt bin, wu�te ich gar nicht, was es f�r eine Freude sein kann, ein Buch zu ber�hren.

Since cognitive disorders such as ADHD and autism may limit abilities to use a phone effectively or correctly, one approach would be to delay or defer use. Of course even a child with strong executive functions can lose a phone, so there are strong economic reasons to delay use. We’ve chosen instead to move the use date forward, to the earliest time that a cognitively disabled child is likely to be able to follow basic phone rules. I was mildly surprised by this. I thought we’d favor delay, but when we thought things through the reasons for moving sooner became quite strong.

The last is a big reason. I’ve owned an iPhone for a year now. The opportunities to deliver cognitive aids, training materials, and support systems through these mobile- computers-that-you-can-by-the-way-talk-on is immense. Just as computers opened (fitfully and erratically) new opportunities for blind persons, so too may these technologies allow the cognitively disabled to take on new life opportunities and employment. We want to explore these options and leverage what’s available starting now. Some time in the next 1-3 years the child phone will be an iPhone-equivalent.

Ich habe ja noch nie besonders viel von dem bekannten Slogan “Information wants to be free” gehalten, wenn auch haupts�chlich aus grammatikalischen Gr�nden. Mein alter Deutschlehrer h�tte sich im Grabe umgedreht. Heute kam mir aber in den Sinn, wie es richtiger heissen m�sste: Users want to be free.

They want free access to world wide information
They want free access to the literature
They want free access to libraries

and - most important -

They want freedom of choice how to interact with information and literature

And last not least they want freedom of choice how to interact with librarians. On principle that means we as librarians should make use of as many communication channels as possible, make use of as many tools as possible, serve as many gadgets as possible, be present on as many social networks as possible.

Viele klinische Studien, mit denen Medizinforscher nach besseren Behandlungsmethoden suchen, sind f�r �rzte und Patienten unbrauchbar. So lautet das Urteil zweier Professoren der Universit�t Oxford. Sie haben unter anderem die Auswahl der Fragen untersucht, auf die Forscher mit klinischen Studien eine Antwort suchten, sie analysierten, ob die Forschungsmethoden gut und richtig waren, und ob die Ergebnisse angemessen ver�ffentlicht wurden. Eines der Ergebnisse: Nur in neun von mehr als 340 untersuchten Studien gingen die Forscher �berhaupt auf die Bed�rfnisse von �rzten und Patienten ein - und auch da lagen sie oft dramatisch daneben. So erhoffen sich zum Beispiel bei einer h�ufigen Knieerkrankung die weitaus meisten Patienten und �rzte dringend Fortschritte in der Chirurgie und Physiotherapie. MLA: 70% expecting budget cuts

Habe ganz vergessen: Die MLA hat ja auch ein Statement on the Global Economic Crisis and its Impact on Health Sciences Library Collections herausgebracht (Fettdruck durch mich):

In this time of economic constraint, however, health sciences libraries are confronted with daunting challenges to maintain the collections and services that are needed to support their institutions� information needs. Budget pressures in the current economic environment are forcing some community hospitals to close their libraries, severely decreasing or eliminating access to vital information and resources. Libraries in most academic health centers are also facing severe cutbacks resulting from declining state support, declining clinical revenues, decreased gifts and endowments, and increased competition for a smaller number of research grants. A recent AAHSL survey found that many academic libraries had mid-year budget reductions in the current fiscal year, and that nearly 70% are expecting budget cuts for the coming year, some of which could be 10% or higher. In many cases, these are permanent cuts to library budgets, and, with few exceptions, libraries will have to reduce collection budgets as part of their cost-saving strategy.

Dana warf am Freitag eine interessante Frage in medlib-l auf, die ich hier auch gerne zur Abstimmung stelle (siehe links):

Today I received a request from an employee for a publication from an association for professionals who work with “those who struggle with unwanted homosexuality.” Since the publication isn’t in PubMed, I ended up at the association’s site in order to get the full citation and so saw what the organization is about.

The employee works in an allied health position that has nothing to do with behavioral health. If it were one of our psychologists, for example, I would think nothing of pulling information and resources on the topic. But since the employee is not in a field where providing any sort of counseling is not part of the job, chances are this is a personal use only request.

In your libraries, where do you draw the line on non-work related requests –especially when it’s not something available at your library? Obviously, it’s not always going to be apparent when someone’s asking for something for their own use, but how do you approach this when you have an inkling that it is? I did have a physician ask for a number of literary review articles one time, and I referred her to another library because that’s not something we have resources for.

How MLA members use social networking tools

In view of recent news reports regarding the publication of an industry-sponsored journal primarily for marketing purposes by the affiliate of a major medical publisher without disclosure of commercial support or publication purpose, the Medical Library Association (MLA) and the Association of Academic Health Sciences Libraries (AAHSL) jointly endorse the need for transparency with regard to publication source and funding. MLA and AAHSL want to emphasize the importance of journal publishers� adherence to the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICJME) policy that all participants in the peer-review and publication process must disclose all relationships that could be viewed as potential conflicts of interest. http://www.icmje.org/index.html - authorship> Notably, the National Library of Medicine has a relevant policy regarding supplements that requires full disclosure of outside sponsorship in order for publications to be indexed in MEDLINE. http://www.nlm.nih.gov/pubs/factsheets/supplements.html

Wie Edlef mir gerade mitteilte, war medinfo in den letzten Tagen Ziel von Spammern, die �ber eine Wordpress-Sicherheitsl�cke unsere Header vollgem�llt haben. Also im Grunde nichts Neues, solche Angriffe erlebt man immer wieder - der alte Kampf zwischen Gut und B�se, zwischen Blogger und Spammer. F�r medinfo bedeutet das nun eine kleine Auszeit: Es hei�t aufzur�sten auf die neueste Version von Wordpress. Da 2.8 vor der T�re steht (10.6.), werde ich damit aber noch ein bisschen warten, um mir keine doppelte Arbeit zu machen. Zur Sicherheit warte ich auch noch auf die 2.8.1, die standardm��ig dann nachgeschoben wird, um die Sicherheitsm�ngel der 2.8 auszub�geln.

Florian R�tzer schreibt in Wie ehrlich sind Wissenschaftler? (02.06.2009 in Telepolis) �ber eine Plos One-Studie, die nahelegt, dass Wissenschaftler bei ihren Ver�ffentlichungen wahrscheinlich �fter die Daten manipulieren, als man meinen w�rde:

Betr�gereien oder F�lschungen sind demnach gar nicht so selten, besonders anf�llig ist daf�r, wenig �berraschend, die medizinische und pharmazeutische Forschung. Die bekannt gewordenen F�lle sind vermutlich nur die Spitze des Eisbergs.

Durchschnittlich gaben 1,97 Prozent der Wissenschaftler zu, dass sie zumindest einmal Daten ver�ndert oder fabriziert hatten, um das Ergebnis ihrer Studie zu verbessern oder die Ergebnisse den Anforderungen des Geldgebers anzupassen. 33,7 Prozent r�umten ein, dass sie andere fragw�rdige Tricks eingesetzt haben, beispielsweise Informationen zu verschweigen, die den eigenen Ergebnissen widersprechen, oder Beobachtungen oder Daten nicht einzubeziehen, weil die Wissenschaftler das Gef�hl hatten, dass sich nicht richtig sein k�nnen.

Aber jetzt kommt’s:

Wenn es um die Kollegen geht, sind die Wissenschaftler freim�tiger (oder misstrauischer?). 14 Prozent sagen, sie w�rden einen Kollegen kennen, der Daten fabriziert, ver�ndert oder verf�lscht hat, bei anderen fragw�rdigen Schummeleien sagen dies sogar 72 Prozent.

PDA or Smartphone?

A new report from Forrester Research analyst Ian Fogg suggests that the term �smartphone� is no longer helpful because it fails to describe any discernible grouping of today�s increasingly �smart� handsets. Many in the healthcare industry still believe the term �PDA� to be a worthwhile constituent of their everyday vocabulary, even though personal digital assistants could include everything from a mobile phone, a handheld video game console and � soon enough � next-generation digital cameras.

�A PDA was essentially a mini-computer that was a pocket-sized device,� Fogg told mobiheathnews in a recent interview. ��PDA� was a category of devices that basically got killed by the mobile phone in the early 2000s, because the main thing consumers used that device category for was address book, calendar and maybe email. Those things fit naturally into today�s mobile phones.�

The company�s plan points to a growing trend of doctors returning to what was once a mainstay of the profession: the house call.

Hodge has already established that the iPhone doctor model works � after more than a decade working in a pediatrics office in St. Louis, Missouri, where she saw up to 35 patients a day for about 10 minutes each, Hodge traded in the patient assembly line to launch Personal Pediatrics. That was three years ago. Back then she had her laptop and Palm Treo in tow.

Since then the convergence of advancements in smartphone technologies, culminating in the iPhone, plus the growing popularity of so-called �concierge� medical practices, where patients typically pay out of pocket for the convenience of house calls or more personalized care, convinced Hodge that pediatricians could provide better care and make more money by leaving the doctor�s office behind.

�Some would call Personal Pediatrics a �concierge medical practice,� but I prefer to call it a direct medical practice,� Hodge explained,�because we�re connecting patients who want house calls to physicians who want to make them.�

Personal Pediatrics provides its physician �affiliates� with a retainer-based pediatric web portal with secure access to patient medical records, a cloud-based house call practice platform provided by a
third-party with full HIPAA compliance, software and hardware support as well as encrypted remote data storage and firewall protection. Hodge said that once the iPhone 3.0 version comes out, which is supposed to debut in June, the Flash 7.0 update to the phone will enable her company�s physician affiliates to access all features of the company�s cloud-based platform from their iPhones.

�We had five people in my old doctor�s office,� Hodge said. �Two dug through the paper records, two answered the phones and one person begged the insurance people. It costs about $200,000 a year to run a pediatrician�s office that way. With this new model it costs about $50,000 and the revenue is about the same. It�s an office-less, [almost] staff-less model. You might need one person on-staff to handle admin duties but you certainly won�t need five anymore.�

Mi�trauen bei wissenschaftlichen Zeitungsmeldungen ist angebracht

Darin halte ich es ja mit Hanns-Dieter H�sch. Zeitungsmeldungen � la “Die Wissenschaft hat festgestellt: Tomaten sind t�dlich, Karotten lebengef�hrlich” und am n�chsten Tag hei�t es dann: “Tomaten sind gut, Petersilie ist lebensgef�hrlich” begegne ich grunds�tzlich mit gro�er Vorsicht. Umso mehr, wenn die wissenschaftlichen Entdeckungen so gut in unser Weltbild passen wie die von den Frauen, die beim Speed-Dating w�hlerischer sind als M�nner. Wie Wissenschaft Online nun schreibt, lag das aber einzig und allein beim Versuchsaufbau: Frauen blieben sitzen, M�nner wechselten die Tische/Partner. Sobald es umgekehrt ist, also die M�nner sitzen bleiben, verschwindet der Effekt der gr��eren weiblichen Zur�ckhaltung.

Wobei es immer wieder verbl�ffend ist, dass so geringe, kaum signifikante Unterschiede wie 50 zu 43% (M�nner wollen 50 Prozent der Frauen kennenlernen, Frauen jedoch nur 43 Prozent der M�nner) von den Medien zu dem Alles-oder-Nichts-Slogan eingedampft werden: Frauen sind grunds�tzlich w�hlerischer als M�nner!

Viel wahrscheinlicher (und wissenschaftlicher) scheint mir da das Ergebnis einer n=1 Studie zu sein, die ich heute mit einer nur mir bekannten Versuchsperson durchf�hrte: 100% aller Zeitungsleser glauben noch die d�mmsten Meldungen. Die genaue Ursache ist nicht bekannt, es wird �ber einen Blackout der Gro�hirnrinde spekuliert…

Cogitus interruptus - Chronische Zerstreuung

Heidi Stieger geb�hrt das Verdienst uns im - mittlerweile mehrautorigen - infobib Blog auf den wunderbaren Text von Eduard Kaeser in der NZZ aufmerksam gemacht zu haben: Cogitus interruptus: Googeln, Bloggen und Twittern (Fettdruck durch mich):

Die Menschen des Web-Zeitalters halten das Leben ohne st�ndige Mehrfachbesch�ftigung nicht mehr aus. Die Folge davon ist eine neue Zivilisationskrankheit: die chronische Zerstreuung. Dagegen hilft nur eines � wir m�ssen eine Kultur der Aufmerksamkeit entwickeln.

Kaeser trifft den wunden Punkt der ganzen Herumgetwitter- und gebloggerei, der “Nebenwirkungen” der sch�nen neuen Welt, der Fallstricke f�r die Multitasking-unf�higen Menschlein, fast auf den Punkt genau und liefert uns bei der Gelegenheit so en passent einer der sch�nsten weil treffendsten Beschreibung der neuzeitlichen Arbeitsrealit�t anhand eines eigenen Erfahrungsberichtes:

Multitasking. Kaum sind wir im Netz, regt sich die Versuchung, genau das nicht zu tun, was man sich eigentlich zu tun vorgenommen hat. Wir browsen, bloggen, chatten, googeln, simsen, twittern, zatooen wie die Gehetzten. Ich erlebte das neulich ironischerweise beim Verfassen dieses Textes. Ich tat, was zig Millionen von Desktop-Arbeitern heute tun. Ich googelte nach einem kleinen Artikel zum Thema Multitasking, entdeckte dabei drei weitere einschl�gige Artikel, die mich interessierten. W�hrend des Ausdruckens checkte ich en passant meine E-Mails, schaute kurz in die Website der �New York Book Reviews� und blieb an einem Essay von Amartya Sen h�ngen, �ber ein v�llig anderes Thema. Die laufende Jazzsendung auf DRS 2 stellte gleichzeitig einen interessanten italienischen Pianisten vor, der mir so gut gefiel, dass ich bei i-Tunes nachschaute, diverse St�cke von ihm fand, sie sofort kaufte und herunterlud und auf eine CD brannte. Statt am Text weiterzuarbeiten, begann ich die Musik zu h�ren, nicht ohne mich zugleich auf der Homepage des Pianisten �ber dessen Biografie und Diskografie zu informieren. Ehe ich michs versah, war meine Hauptaufmerksamkeit auf zwei oder drei Nebenspuren verzettelt. Ich fand nicht mehr zur Konzentration auf die urspr�ngliche Arbeit zur�ck. �Cogitus interruptus� nenne ich das f�r mich. Dagegen kenne ich zwei Mittel: Sex oder Joggen. Sie f�gen mich wieder zusammen.

K�rperliche Bet�tigung ist in der Tat ein aprobates Mittel gegen die geistige Verzettelung und mag in der Kombination Sex/Joggen wohl tats�chlich den Mindcomputer auf Null, in den Ausgangszustand zu versetzen, sozusagen physisch zu rebooten (und BTW der immanenten Gefahr von Herzrythmusst�rungen vorzubeugen). Aber hier sehe ich auch eine - klitzekleine - Ungenauigkeit in der Argumentation Kaesers, der vielleicht unbeleckt von irgendwelchen Meditation/Kontemplationsgeschichtchen ist: Jeder, der seinen Siddartha oder Magister Ludus kennt, d�rfte da noch mindestens eine andere M�glichkeit anbieten k�nnen, wie man dem ungew�nschten Zustand nicht rehabilitativ sondern urs�chlich abhilft: Eben sich auf der eigentlichen Ebene des Mi�-Geschehens - dem Geistigen - zu behelfen und der geistigen Verzettelung die Versammlung/Konzentration auf geistige Inhalte (siehe Kontemplation bei Wikipedia) gegen�berzustellen. Kaeser spricht in diesem Punkt lediglich - und wie mir scheint unpr�zise - von Aufmerksamkeit. Der Aufmerksamkeit fehlt mir aber der entscheidende Faktor, um sich den Zerstreuungen zu entziehen: Die Willenskraft. Konzentration ist Aufmerksamkeit + Willenskraft.

Ich habe noch ein wichtiges Argument gegen die Kaeserischen Thesen: Mir ist es doch tats�chlich gelungen, seinen ziemlich langen Text in einem St�ck - ohne Unterbrechung und Ablenkungen - zu lesen! Das spricht auch f�r ihn aber noch mehr f�r das Ger�t, auf dem ich den Text las: Den iPhone. Durch die Singularit�t der Anwendungen und ge�ffneten Fenster (nicht 10 wie auf dem PC, sondern immer nur eins) schafft der iPhone (so �hnlich wie das gedruckte Buch) ein Distraction-Free Interface, einen ablenkungsfreien Raum.

Aber zur�ck zu Kaeser, der mit allem ziemlich richtig liegt, auch mit folgendem:

Die Psyche verkraftet offensichtlich die Datenflut schlecht. Wer im B�ro jede dritte Minute einem Unterbruch ausgesetzt ist und auf dem Computerbildschirm acht Fenster ge�ffnet hat, riskiert, abgelenkt, kribblig, impulsiv und ruhelos zu werden, und � auf lange Sicht � Leistung abzubauen, in ironischer Verkehrung dessen, was uns die neuen Technologien eigentlich verheissen haben. Wir werden zu Kommunikations-Spastikern. Hallowell pr�gte einen neuen Begriff f�r dieses Zwangsverhalten: �Frazzing�, K�rzel f�r �frantic multitasking� (also die �rasende� Form von Multitasking).

Gleichzeitig mit gleicher Konzentration zwei verschiedene Dinge zu tun, sagt der M�nch- ner Gehirnforscher Ernst P�ppel, sei physiologisch nicht m�glich: �Was geschieht, ist eigentlich eher etwas Negatives: Ich schalte sehr schnell zwischen verschiedenen Kontexten hin und her, konzentriere mich also drei Sekunden lang auf einen Sprachfetzen, drei Sekunden auf das Fernsehen, drei auf den Computer. Das kann ich endogen tats�chlich steuern. Aber der Effekt ist, dass es zu einer Art schizoidem Denken kommt, mit dem nichts mehr verbunden ist. Es gibt dann keine Nachhaltigkeit der Repr�sentation mehr, keine Nachhaltigkeit der Informationsverarbeitung.�

Und hier m�chte ich etwas einwerfen bzw. den Gedanken fortf�hren: Es gibt in der Twitter- und Facebookwelt ja nicht nur schizoides Denken, sondern - was viel schwerer wiegt - schizoide Pers�nlichkeiten! Auf Twitter habe ich jetzt drei, nein vier Accounts (zur Sicherheit), auf Facebook zwei, mein MySpace-Account ruht im Moment, dann habe ich noch einen auf Xing, einen im Nature Network, die Zahl der Blogs, die ich schreibe, habe ich aus den Augen verloren irgendwas zweistelliges, und letztens wurde ich vorwurfsvoll gefragt, wieso ich noch nicht bei LinkedIn sei. T.Scott hat in seinem Posting “Trying To Be Complete” mal wunderbar beschrieben, wieso er nicht “schizoid” sein mag:

In my own case, there simply isn’t a separation, and it has been that way for a long time, [...] All of us have many, many aspects to our selves — Lynn teases me about “responsible guy” and “night guy,” (as Frisse once famously said of Lynn, “the woman has whole cities inside her”) — but the boundaries are porous, and in the world in which we now live, impossible to maintain. You are fooling yourself if you think you can. [...] I’m no longer looking for “balance” because that still seems to imply managing two poles. I don’t have a “personal” or “professional” side. I strive to be complete.

Aber wieder zur�ck zu Kaeser, der uns an die eigene Nase und Zerstreuungslust packt:

Wir sind es, die uns sozusagen �ber die Ger�te gegen uns selbst richten. Reflektierte Zeitgenossen wie etwa der englische Journalist Andrew Sullivan � ein bekennender Blogger � sehen das durchaus ein: �Wenn es darauf ankommt, mich hinzusetzen und ein mehrseitiges Druckprodukt oder, Gott bewahre, ein Buch zu lesen, klemmt mein Geist einen Augenblick lang. Nach der Lekt�re eines Abschnitts bin ich reif f�r einen neuen Link. Aber die Prosa vor meiner Nase streckt sich dahin. Ein paar Abschnitte weiter, und ich greife zum Laptop. Es verh�lt sich nicht so, dass ich nicht Zeit f�nde zum wirklichen Lesen, zum mussevollen Aufnehmen von Argumenten oder Geschichten. Vielmehr ist mein Geist so konditioniert, dass er sich dagegen str�ubt.�

Ok, guter Punkt, trifft sicherlich zu. Aber das ist nichts Neues, das kennen wir schon vom Fernsehen. Immer schnellere Schnitte, dazu wird gezappt (das sollen angebl�ich nur M�nner machen), das sich die Balken biegen. Statt einem Film werden drei geguckt, sonst hat man das Gef�hl, was verpasst zu haben. Und wir haben uns angepasst - MTV-Geschwindigkeit ist jetzt die Norm, ein alter Truffaut-Film (letztens wieder “Sie k�ssten und sie schlugen ihn” - ein seltener Genu�!) zwingt zu Geduld und Willensst�rke - oder einer Fernbedienung mit Zeitschloss.

Alles in allem spricht Kaeser mir aus der Seele und formuliert das elegant, was sich bei mir an Gedanken so in der letzten Jahren angesammelt hatte und nur deswegen keine Niederschrift fand, weil ich ~~mich immer so schnell ablenken lasse~~ halt nun mal kein Philosoph bin.

Opinion: How much work can you do on an iPhone?

It�s hard not to look at an iPhone and wonder whether you could chuck your laptop and use it to do all your work instead. After all, it offers e-mail, always-on Web access, and an ever increasing roster of applications, many of which have business use in mind. Add in the fact that laptops are awkward to carry to meetings, and that their batteries never last as long as the work you need to do, and the appeal of replacing a laptop with an iPhone becomes readily apparent. So in the spirit of finding out how far you can you go relying exclusively on an iPhone for work, I decided to spend a month using an iPhone 3G in place of my laptop wherever possible.

Give your laptop a rest. The iPhone comes very close to being a laptop replacement for many basic business and field-service uses. UCLA: Erosion of library budgets -> Open letter to publishers

Peter Suber berichtet, dass am 26.Mai die University of California Libraries einen Open Letter to Licensed Content Providers geschrieben hat mit folgendem Inhalt (Fettdruck durch mich):

The University of California Libraries ask all information providers with whom we negotiate content licenses to respond to the major fiscal challenges affecting higher education in California in a spirit of collaboration and mutual problem-solving. We expect to work with each of our vendors at renewal to develop creative solutions that can preserve the greatest amount of content to meet the information needs of the University of California�s students, faculty, and researchers.

As a state-supported institution, the University of California has experienced significant budget reductions in fiscal year 2009, with more reductions to come. The $531 million shortfall now anticipated in state funding for the 2009-10 fiscal year amounts to nearly 17 percent of the $3.2 billion the state provides UC annually. Numerous cost containment measures are in place across the university, including salary and other compensation freezes for senior managers, hiring curtailments for other staff, travel restrictions, and other mandated reductions.

UC Libraries are being hit hard by the budget reduction mandates in effect at each of the UC campuses. Targeted reductions to library materials budgets for fiscal year 2010 vary across the campuses, with some as high as 20%. Many campuses have been alerted that additional cuts will be levied in fiscal year 2011. Coupled with the typical inflationary increases for scholarly publications, the erosion of library buying power will have a profound and lasting impact on all of the UC libraries. Monographic purchasing has already been seriously curtailed, and every electronic content license is being placed under careful scrutiny.

Article-Level Metrics at PLoS come from the assumption that readers need some way to measure, or at least gain an insight into, the �worth� (or �impact� or �value� or �relevance� etc) of a journal article. Clearly there is no substitute for actually reading an article to determine it�s importance, but with around 1.3 million articles published per year it is clearly impossible to read everything � therefore filtering tools are needed.

Currently, the main filter that people use is the journal in which an article is published (which is typically used as a predictive measure as to whether an article is worth reading) and the citations that the article eventually receives (which is, of course, an �after the fact� indication of how often the article was used by other writers). Although a handful of journals have now started to provide online usage data for each article, PLoS is going further than this. We are at the start of a program to provide citation data, usage data, social bookmarking activity, media coverage, blog coverage, commenting activity, �star� ratings, and more, on every article that we publish.

Ein erster Gedanke: Was die Ploser zum Filtern benutzen (und um den Wert ihres Angebots f�r den zeitgestressten Forscher zu erh�hen), k�nnte sich auch f�r die Erwerbungspolitik von Bibliotheken als deutlicher Mehrwert herauskristallisieren. Als altes, auf Nutzungsdaten abonniertes Z�hlwiesel k�nnte ich mir vorstellen, dass diese “neuen” Parameter Eingang in bibliothekarische Entscheidungen �ber die Fortdauer oder die Abbestellung von Zeitschriftenabos finden. Soweit sogut, viel interessanter (und wichtiger) w�re allerdings die v�llige Losl�sung von dem Modell der Zeitschrift als Container f�r eine meh oder weniger zuf�llige Auswahl von Artikeln hin zu dem Modell einer besseren B�ndelung (if any) von Artikeln mit einer optimaleren und individuell einstellbaren “predictive measure”. Auf die Gesch�ftsmodelle bin ich schon gespannt!

Dass Mehrwertsteuer auf eJournals negativ f�r Angebot und Konkurrenzf�higkeit in der EU wissen wir ja bereits und deutsche Bibliotheken werden darob auch in den USA, D�nemark, Austria, Schweden, den UK, der Czech Republic und Lithuania bedauert, aber der Vorteil von Kombi-Abos (Mehrwertsteuersatz wie Print) beginnt nun auch zu schwinden, wie ich einem Brief von Swets entnehme, der sich mit der Mehrwertsteuertrennung des Verlages Taylor&Francis auseinandersetzt.

“Die Anzahl der Verlage mit dieser Vorhergehensweise k�nne sich erh�hen”, schreibt Swets. Statt Kombiabos werden wir demn�chst vielleicht mehr e-only-Abos vorfinden. K�nnten die Verlage �ber eine Mehrwertsteuertrennung die Bibliotheken ein bisschen in diese Richtung treiben? Doch nur, wenn die Agenturen das mitmachen, oder?

I received a request from a well-known learned society, which I will anonymise as the Foology Society … A well-known scientist and long-standing member and officer of the Society (Prof. Foo) rang me and asked if I could give her informal advice about whether the Society should sell its flagship journal to a commercial publisher. The motivation was not primarily to raise revenue, but fear about the commercial prospects of society journals. She sent me the following which epitomizes the concerns of many of the society officers:

Libraries will target most of their cost cutting attentions on the smaller academic/not-for-profit sector subscriptions in order to protect the large commercial contracts such as the �Big Deal� and similar consortia. The days of small independent publishing are over, out-licensing is the only way to protect publishing income.

She regards this as a catastrophe for the society and the journal and asked if I could provide contrary views.

In most cases, when I get back the traditional, blind peer review comments on my papers and book proposals and conference submissions, I don�t know who to believe. Most issues are only raised by one reviewer. I find myself wondering, �Is this a general issue that I need to fix, or just something that rubbed one particular person the wrong way?� I try to look back at the piece with fresh eyes, using myself as a check on the review, or sometimes seek the advice of someone else involved in the process (e.g., the papers chair of the conference). But with this blog-based review it�s been a quite different experience. [...] faced with just his comment, in anonymous form, I might have made only a small change. However, once they started the conversation rolling, others agreed with their points and expanded beyond a focus on The Sims � and people also engaged me as I started thinking aloud about how to fix things � and the results made it clear that the larger discussion of process intensity was problematic, not just my treatment of one example. In other words, the blog-based review form not only brings in more voices (which may identify more potential issues), and not only provides some �review of the reviews� (with reviewers weighing in on the issues raised by others), but is also, crucially, a conversation.

I�m convinced that the ability to engage with one�s reviewers conversationally, and have them engage with each other in this way, is one of the key strengths of this approach. It should be noted, however, that the conversational nature of the blog-based review process also had a less-positive side, which produced my second surprise. While it is possible to try to pick up threads of conversation after they have been quiet for a few days, the results are generally much less successful than when one responds within a day or, better yet, an hour. Das Kommentieren eines ganzen Buches f�llt naturgem�� schwerer als sich �ber bestimmte Abschnitte auszulassen, weswegen die Diskussion anscheinend nicht imemr zielf�hrend oder “ganzheitlich” war. Bei Zeitschriftenartikeln w�rde dieser Nachteil aufgrund der �bersichtlichkeit und K�rze vermutlich wegfallen.

I worried the blog-based review form might be worse than useless if its impact was to turn authors (myself included) away from major, systemic issues with manuscripts and toward the section-specific comments of blog visitors with little sense of the book�s project. My concerns in this area became particularly acute as the review went on. A growing body of comments seemed to be written without an understanding of how particular elements fit into the book�s wider frame.

The blog-based reviewers offered almost no remarks comparing chapters to one another � perhaps because they experienced the manuscript more as sections than chapters. Still, as I will discuss below, they also offered much more detailed section-specific commentary, much of it quite useful, than it would be possible to expect from press-solicited anonymous reviews.

[...] the number of manuscripts that require review dictates that only a few reviewers should consider each manuscript. Otherwise, the burden of manuscript review would impede the completion of other work. When only a few reviewers look at each manuscript, each will have some areas of relevant expertise. But for many manuscripts, especially interdisciplinary ones, there will be many topics discussed for which none of the reviewers possess particular expertise. There�s no real way around this.

medinfo wird 5 Jahre alt

Der Blogautor bei der Arbeit

Heute* wird medinfo 5 Jahre alt. Als Verbandsblog k�nnen es alle Mitgliedern der AGMB aktiv und passiv nutzen. Mein Dank gilt den vielen Autoren und Kommentatoren, die durch ihre Beitr�ge den Blog sehr beleben. Solcherart geh�rt medinfo mit 2.620 Beitr�gen und 900 Kommentaren zu den etablierten Biblioblogs, auch wenn wir gegen�ber unserem gro�en Vorbild netbib nat�rlich ein zahlenm�ssiger Waisenknabe sind. Apropos Kind: Mit 5 Jahren ist medinfo ja so gerade der Trotzphase entwachsen, so langsam k�nnen wir uns auf die Einschulung vorbereiten…

Bei dieser Gelegenheit ist es mir eine angenehme Ehre und Pflicht, an Hebamme und Super-Nanny “Edlef” zu erinnern, der in den verschiedenen Stadien dabei half, medinfo auf den Weg zu bringen. Alles begann ja damit, dass Edlef im M�rz 2004 in seiner unnachahmlichen Art einen Workshop in M�nster leitete, auf dem er zahlreiche Medizinbibliothekare f�r dieses neue Medium begeisterte. Ich wei� nicht mehr, ob wir praktisch wurden, auf jeden Fall richtete ich mir ein paar Tage sp�ter den Twoday-Geburtsblog ein. Sp�ter �ffnete er seine netbib-Dom�ne f�r das neue Kind und unterst�tzte es regelm�ssig bei Update-Versuchen. Statt Spielzeug brachte er medinfo immer Plugins mit, die dann begeistert ausprobiert (und oft zerst�rt ) wurden. Nach dem ersten Umzug von Twoday meisterte er auch den zweiten nach Dortmund bravour�s, so dass man sich ganz auf die inhaltliche Arbeit konzentrieren konnte. Seine liebevolle Aufmerksamkeit f�r das fr�h fl�gge gewordene Kind hat nie nachgelassen, auch heute noch schaut er nach medinfo und verhilft ihm mit dem ein oder anderen netbib-Beitrag zu gr��erer Publizit�t.

* Zwar wurde der erste Beitrag bereits im April geschrieben, aber es handelte sich eher um einen Versuchsballon, denn danach kam ganz lange nichts. So richtig los ging dann aber am 19. Mai mit dem Beitrag: Arnoud de Kemp verl��t Springer. Schon an dieser Post wird der grunds�tzliche Anspruch deutlich, aus dem - insbesondere medizinischen - Verlags- und Bibliothekswesen zu berichten. Seitdem bringt medinfo in sch�ner und zuverl�ssiger Regelm�ssigkeit alle Arten von Meldungen �ber diesen Bereich und generell �ber alles, was ~~mich~~ Medizinbibliothekare interessiert.

Bibliotheken sind ja meist von der öffentlichen Hand finanziert und legen als solche gerne auch mal eine Art Behördenmentalität an den Tag. Das beobachte ich immer wieder mit einem - wohl von beginnendem Alters~~weisheit~~fatalismus geprägten inneren Schmunzeln. Manchmal vergeht mir aber selbiges. Insbesondere die einfallslosen Kontaktformulare ansonsten vorbildlicher Bibliotheken treiben mich noch einmal in den ~~Altersschwach~~Wahnsinn! In tristestem Behördendeutsch werden dort mehr recht als schlecht die simpelsten Kontaktdaten des Bittstellers abgefragt: Name, Email-Adresse, Nachricht - mehr fällt den Bibliothekhansels einfach nicht ein!! Selbst die Betreffzeile wird vorgegeben! Dass für die meisten Benutzer Informationskompetenz eine große ~~Schwierigkeit~~ Herausforderung ist, habe ich mittlerweile geschluckt (Alters… , s.o.), aber für wie dumm wird denn hier der Benutzer gehalten - als könne er noch nicht einmal die Betreffzeile richtig ausfühlen … ?

Naja, wie dem auch sein, ~~selbst~~ Bibliotheken sind lernfähig, stehen ja im Wettbewerb und schauen sich um. Und da fiel mir doch zufällig ein wunderbares Beispiel gehobener Kontakt~~fabulier~~formularkunst in die Hände (Ich sage nicht, wo ich das her habe. Meine Lippen sind versiegelt ).

Da kann sich der Kontaktsuchende noch so richtig austoben und sich nicht nur als armer Bittsteller fühlen. Eine schöne Besonderheit: Das Formular geht davon aus, dass jeder einen Titel hat und wenn es bloss ein Bachelor ist. Es kann nicht ohne Angabe eines Titel abgesandt werden. Bei Handwerkern, LIDL-Verkäufern und Abiturienten ohne höheren Bildungsabschluss ist also echte Kreativität gefragt. Man muß sich - schweren Herzens oder genüßlich, je nach Charakter - für einen der zahlreichen Titel entscheiden. Mir fiel es zugegebenermassen ziemlich schwer. Ich weiß nicht, möchte ich lieber Baron oder Freiherr sein? Zeit für eine neue Abstimmung in der Sidebar …

Wie ist die Relevanz dieser “Datenbanken” f�r uns Medizinbibliotheken? Brauchen wir sowas? M�ssen wir sowas anbieten? Uns damit besch�ftigen? Verstehen wir es �berhaupt? Welche Universit�t hat bereits ein Abo f�r ein solches System laufen? Bei uns schliessen sich zZt die Forscher f�r eine Finanzierung zusammen und denken gar nicht an die Bibliothek. Why should we go through so much effort and agony to teach undergraduate students to use library-provided subscription databases when the vast majority of them will never again have access to those databases once they graduate?

Ja, warum eigentlich? Wir Mediziner haben es da ja vergleichsweise leicht, wir k�nnen uns mit vergleichsweise ruhigem Gewissen auf das frei verf�gbare PubMed beschr�nken. Aber wenn man mal anf�ngt, dar�ber nachzudenken … Salo k�nnen die Antworten auf ihre Frage jedenfalls nicht �berzeugen.

… So � as many have noted � here is a commercial company which has campaigned to rubbish Open Access as �junk science� behaving in a manner which totally destroys any trust in their ethics and practice. I have no option but to say that I now cannot absolutely trust the ethical integrity of every piece of information in Elsevier journals.

Bei dieser ganzen Elsevier-MSD-Fake-Journal-Hype* (zuletzt von David Gorski sehr gut aufgedr�selt: Threats to science-based medicine: Big pharma pays a publisher to produce a fake journal) stellte sich mir heute morgen die Frage, wie finden die Autoren das eigentlich? Machen vielleicht eine gute klinische Studie �ber Vioxx oder was auch immer, geben korrekt an, dass sie von MSD gesponsert wurden, reichen den Artikel bei Lancet ein, nur um sich dann nach erfolgter Publikation auch noch in so einem Australasian-K�sebl�ttchen wiederverwertet zu finden?! Die �berlegen sich doch dreimal, ob sie demn�chst dem Verlag noch das Copyright f�r ~~solche Marketing-Aktionen~~ alles abtreten …

Of course, they must have been reprints of articles that appeared in other Elsevier journals! Otherwise, Elsevier wouldn�t have had the rights to publish them! It�s not necessarily the quality of the reprinted articles that�s an issue. It�s their packaging in a pseudojournal that�s nothing more than an advertising vehicle for Merck without any disclosure that that�s what the purpose of the journal was!

Andrerseits, zwingen nicht gerade die hohen Pay-Access-Walls gerade niedergelassene �rzte (siehe auch Wie finde ich Open Access Artikel in Medizin?) zu diesen Publikationen zu greifen, weil sie als einzige frei verf�gbar sind?

Und, die wichtigste Frage: M�ssen wir jetzt unsere Wissenschaftler nicht warnen? “Pa� auf! Wenn du in einer Elsevier-Zeitschrift publizierst, k�nntest du in einem K�sebl�ttchen landen…”

* Diesmal ist Elsevier erwischt worden, das n�chste Mal ist es Wiley oder Springer… Die ganze Branche hatte vor Jahren das Sponsored Publishing als erfolgversprechendes Gesch�ftsmodell gefeiert und mischt da fleissig mit. Noch eine Info BTW: 1/2 bis 3/4 aller klinischen Studien sollen von der Pharmaindustrie gesponsert sein: Medical Journals = Pharma Marketing Tool.

Der Tinyurl-Preview sagt, es ist starnix.org/Radio1. Oh, es IST Spam: In den 5 Minuten, wo ich diesen Post schreibe, hat sich Janice’s Folgerschaft auf 77 verdreifacht (und wachsend, Stand 7.5.: 907 Following, 126 Followers - so schnell geht das!*. 11.5.: 874 / 159) … Ich nehme an, dass sich Janice einfach an jeden dranh�ngt, der zur Zeit gerade twittert. Sigh, wird also doch nix aus meiner britischen Romance …

* Das ist �brigens ein bekannter Social Networking-Trick, um m�glichst viele dazu zu bekommen, einem zu folgen (”Followers”): Subskribiere/Gruschele/Folge dem Nutzer XYZ, dann wird XYZ auf dich aufmerksam und auch dich subskribieren/gruscheln/folgen. Die Erfolgsrate daf�r liegt bei Janice bei immerhin 14% - h�her als bei jeder anderen Marketingmethode behaupte ich mal (ausgenommen Gewinnspiele ).

In Merck published fake journal berichtet Charles Hamaker in liblicense-l �ber einen unglaublichen Vorwurf an den Pharmagiganten Merck:

The drug company paid Elsevier to produce several volumes of a publication made to look like a peer-reviewed medical journal, with no disclosure of company sponsorship

Aufgedeckt wurde dies u.a. durch Bob Grant im The Scientist (requires registration).

Merck paid an undisclosed sum to Elsevier to produce several volumes of a publication that had the look of a peer-reviewed medical journal, but contained only reprinted or summarized articles–most of which presented data favorable to Merck products–that appeared to act solely as marketing tools with no disclosure of company sponsorship.

Es geht um zwei Ausgaben von 2003 des Australasian Journal of Bone and Joint Medicine. Dass Elsevier sich auf Sponsored Publishing verlegt hat, war lange bekannt, aber den Sponsor nicht zu nennen und so zu tun, als ob es peer-reviewed ist, ersch�ttert nicht nur die Glaubw�rdigkeit von Elsevier, sondern des gesamten Verlagswesens. Auf wenn k�nnen wir uns noch verlassen, wem k�nnen wir vertrauen angesichts der immer h�ufiger aufgedeckten “Entgegenkommen” von Zeitschriften gegen�ber Pharmaunternehmen?

Elsevier hat mittlerweile den Fehler zugegeben (in FT, aber nicht auf Elsevier.com):

Elsevier, the world’s leading scientific publisher, yesterday said it had failed to meet its own standards for “accuracy and transparency” in producing a publication sponsored by Merck, the US pharmaceutical group, but presented as an independent academic journal.

Die Kommentare zu dem Merck-Fall liessen nicht lange auf sich warten:

… if that summary is accurate and left out no mitigating details, it is difficult not to be disturbed by this news. What publishers of the old-fashioned variety (meaning enterprises that are built on editorial selection) have going for them is their credibility. This is what distinguishes them from many of the evolving community and peer-to-peer efforts (e.g., Wikipedia). There are business opportunities that must be passed up if they could undermine the credibility of the brand. Not to disclose sponsorship in the current climate is poor judgment. Joe Esposito

Ich versuche gerade Klarheit �ber die verschiedenen Formen von Open Access zu bekommen. Meines Erachtens gibt es drei Arten:

Libre OA: Wirklich frei und ganz frei, Public Domain oder ein Copyright, das nach der Bethesda-Definition auch Verwertungen wie �bersetzungen oder Text-Mining erlaubt. (Beispiel: BioMed Central, Springer Open Choice, Hochschulschriftenserver, etc)
Gratis OA: Frei verf�gbar, aber das Copyright verhindert Nachnutzungen (freie Angebote von Nature
~~Illegal~~ Accidental OA: Ins Internet gestellte und dort frei verf�gbare Manuskripte und PDFs, obwohl das Copyright beim Verlag liegt und/oder der Verlag dies nicht erlaubt

Folgende Fragen stellen sich mir noch (in Bearbeitung):

Fragen der Archivierung k�nnen alle drei (am ehesten wohl die ersten beiden Arten) betreffen: So archiviert PubMedCentral sowohl 1 als auch 2.
In direktem Zusammenhang damit: Welche Arten von OA sind immer OA, d.h. stehen dauerhaft zur Verf�gung? (z.B. Mission Statement von BioMed Central, das bei einem Verkauf dem K�ufer das “Sorgerecht” f�r OA �bertr�gt)
