16 Bibliothekarinnen und Bibliothekare aus vier Ländern nahmen Anfang der Woche am zweiten “Zukunftskolloquium der Zweigbibliothek Medizin” zu drängenden Fragen des medizinischen Bibliothekswesens teil, darunter die beiden Leiter der deutschen und der österreichischen Nationalbibliotheken für Medizin.

Sechs Jahre nach dem 1. Münsteraner Zukunftskolloquium standen wieder viele der damaligen Themen auf der Tagesordnung, aber auch viele neue. So standen statt Open Access die Sozialen Netzwerke, die Emerging Technologies und natürlich die elektronischen Bücher im Vordergrund. Weitere Themen war das Verschwinden der Ärzte und Wissenschaftler aus der Bibliothek und resultierende Umwidmungen zu einer reinen Arbeits- und Lernbibliothek. Ausgefeilte Marketingmassnahmen sollen den Kontakt zu den nicht-studentieschen Nutzergruppen wiederbeleben. Eine in die Mutterorganisation eingebettete oder von dieser abgeleitete Strategie ist notwendig, um dabei langfristig Erfolg zu haben.

Kreativität und Brainstorming wurden musikalisch unterstützt von Anne-Marie Grage, Clinic-Clown und Akkordeonspielerin aus Münster.

Medical educators need to become more involved in electronic social networking. One of the major findings of this study is that medical students and residents are using Facebook [unprofessionally]. Many medical students seem unaware of or unconcerned with the possible ramifications of sharing personal information in publicly available online profiles even though such information could affect their professional lives.

Ich verpaßte also leider zwei Sitzungen, sollten diese anderweitig gebloggt werden, trage ich es hier nach: Breakout 4: Science in Second Life: a virtual tour Jo Scott Jo will take you on a tour of the key sites of relevance to scientists in the virtual world Second Life. A group discussion will then look at how useful such environments are (or could become) for disseminating scientific ideas and holding virtual conferences. Breakout 6: Communicating Primary Research Publicly Heather Etchevers, Jean-Claude Bradley and Bob O’Hara New web technologies afford unprecedented opportunities to share scientific data and results before official publication in a traditional journal. What are the benefits and drawbacks for a scientist to use these tools? Could the role of traditional publishers change as more scientists adopt increasingly diverse mechanisms to disclose research? How might this change the way science is done in the future?

Breakout 5: Science blogs and online forums as teaching tools Martin Fenner, Oliver Obst, Jeff Marlow: We will discuss the role that science blogs and online forums are having in teaching science today. In a panel discussion we will look at practical examples and examine their potential as well as their shortcomings. Die Sitzung fand im so genannten Georgian Room der RI statt (hat nichts mit Georgien zu tun, sondern dort soll King Georg II. gewohnt haben), ok – die Bestuhlung war etwas einfacher als auf dem Bild. Die drei Impulsreferate stehen als Powerpointfolien bei Slideshare zur Verfügung. (hier, hier und hier). Irgendwie haben wir es zum Schluß hin dann leider doch nicht mehr geschafft wie versprochen ein paar recommendations und best practices zusammenzustellen.

Farewell session: Embracing change: taking online science into the future Richard Grant, Cameron Neylon and Peter Murray-Rust. Moderated by Timo Hannay. Endlich mal ein Moderator nach meinem Geschmack, der verhindert, dass die Diskussion auseinanderläuft! Die Session fand im berühmten Faraday Theatre statt, hier ein paar Eindrücke:

• Peter Murray-Rust: “A blog has a life for it’s own. It should not go to the point where is it getting boring. A blog is about honesty, egalitarismus, neutral support, and has no predictable success. We have a duty to our readership, but should not feel guilty if not blogging for some weeks.”

• Cameron Neylon: “Blog could enhance or damage your carrer. It always about benefits and risks.”
• Richard Grant: “We make some vast assumptions on blogging, e.g. that it’s bad for our career. I think only natural scientist are worried about their career, not scientists from art or humanities. Quite a challenge is that faculty and dean never heard of blogs and it’s use for educational purposes.”
• Discussion: It’s a common feeling that if your not in the lab working on your bench your wasting time. 5% of the audience has experienced active hindrance from their boss when writing blogs.
• Scott Keir: “As part a part of the thinking process, blogging should be accepted in the science community, but should not be too perfect.” Heiße Diskussion, ob Blogbeiträge zitierbar sind, ob Blogbeiträge Publikationen ersetzen können (Erstentdeckungsrecht).
• Murray-Rust meint: “Passionate lay person groups out there are in need of better access to science. For example patient health advocates, environmental change groups, healthy ethics groups. These groups need our help to go on. We have a responsebility to get facts out.”
• Auf die Frage “Who are the top ten scientific bloggers? How to measure the success of your blog?” antwortet Murray-Rust: “You can’t. If you can, you’re lucky.”

Clearly I need to focus my mind (and yours) on what this blog is to be about. I will flesh out the bones in a subsequent posting but for now I can say that the overall domain will be scientific information – consuming, producing, recycling, knowing. I will aim to bring to your attention some issues from the world of LIS (see, you’ve already forgotten haven’t you? It’s Library & Information Services), LIS being the world that I inhabit professionally. I hope also to learn, from your comments, more about the world of science and research that you inhabit and with which I engage through my information endeavours. I hope that you (my readers) will find something of benefit in what I write and that you will in exchange offer me your own reflections as comments.

Hence I have chosen the title Trading Knowledge – a trade between blogger and reader from their different perspectives, and focusing on that world where scientists themselves trade their knowledge though all the tools of scholarly communication.

Future-proof librarians must be not just comfortable with change but able to lead it.
They must be computer/social networking experts. Blogs have been around for over 11 years, social networks for even longer. Computers have been in our libraries for more than 20 years. Why are we still hiring people who can’t use these tools? Why have we kept people on staff who can’t use them? Our library world is quickly changing, and computers and online communities are a major component of future-proofing a library.

Als Bibliothekare steht man des Öfteren vor der schwierigen Frage: “Wie kommt man an die Benutzer heran, wie locke ich sie in meine Schulungen?” Face2Face, an der Auskunftstheke oder bei Erstiveranstaltungen, ist sicherlich ein moderates Mittel, um die ersten Hemmschwellen abzubauen und sich selber bzw. die Bibliothek als modernes, offenens (weltgewandtes) Dienstleistungsunternehmen zu profilieren. Aber kommt dadurch wirklich so etwas wie eine wechselseitige Kommunikation auf, eine Interaktion? Eher nicht. Ich verstehe die Studenten durch diese Massenveranstaltungen auch nicht besser. Die Homepage wird in ähnlich “unmoderater” Weise wirken/genutzt, Telefon und Email werden ad hoc bei Fragen eingesetzt, doch – wie unsere Statistiken zeigen – eher sporadisch. Schulungen, insb. Einzelschulungen und Sprechstunden geben detailliertere Kenntnisse und Einblicke in die Infokompetenz und das Literaturverhalten von Studis, holen aber nur diejenige Minorität ab (20%), die bereit zu so etwas sind und sich und uns eingestehen können, dass sie Hilfe benötigen.

Im Marketing heißt es: Verwende diejenige Kommunikationsmethode, die der Nutzer bevorzugt (Email, Telefon, F2F aber auch Chat, SMS, Skype, ICQ, IM, Social Networks -> Appendix A: College Students in Our Networked World) und dorthin zu gehen, wo der Nutzer sich aufhält (Das heißt doch “Bringbibliothek”, oder?). Dort werden u.U. nicht mehr diejenigen Kanäle benutzt, die der Bibliothekar anbietet, sondern die der Nutzer “hip” findet (Anne Christensen: Marketing 2.0: Nur von hippen Aufsehern!). Email ist fast schon out, verstärkt werden Messagingdienste sozialer Portale wie StudiVZ, MySpace oder Facebook benutzt. Aber wissen wir das wirklich? Eher nicht. OCLC hat letztes Jahr eine umfassende Untersuchung vorgelegt zum Kommunikationsverhalten der Millennials und wie die Bibliotheken ins Bild passen: Sharing, Privacy and Trust in Our Networked World. (Thanks to Gerry Mc Kiernan Friends: Social Networking Sites for Engaged Library Services). Mit Kommentaren, die viel über die Wahrnehmung der Bibliothek (Library=Book) verraten, wie z.B.:

There is too much things on the internet now. let the library be a library and thats that! / The role of the library is to make books and articles available.. not to connect individuals

Dieser Report stellt auch wichtige Fragen, wie z.B. (Fettdruck durch mich):

The percentage of Internet users that have used a library Web site has decreased. Yet why should such a decline surprise us? It is to be expected that an online population equipped with do-it-yourself discovery tools will continue to expand their reach, as well as their desire to be self-sufficient, looking for information on their own in more and more places. Now experts themselves at search and find techniques, users naturally would move away from last-generation, “expert-based” information systems and gravitate to sites designed for them and by them, sites offering self service, quick access and limited rules. No authentication needed, no ILL forms to fill out, just free content and the tools to share it or create it.

The more intriguing question is—what are the services and incentives that online libraries could offer users to entice them to come back or to visit more often or even devote some of their own time to help create a social library site?

Social networking is doing something more than advancing communications between individuals, driving commerce or speeding connectivity. It is redefining roles, muddying the waters between audience and creator, rules and relationships, trust and security, private and public. And the roles are changing, not just for a few but for everyone, and every service, on the Web. Whether one views this new social landscape as a great opportunity for improved information creation and exchange or as a messy playground to be tidied up to restore order, depends on one’s point of view.

Obwohl oder gerade weil die befragten Bibliothekare und Nutzer hier zurückhaltend waren, empfiehlt der Report:

Increasing staff engagement on social sites should be included in every library’s strategic plan.

Denn es reicht nicht, einfach die Webseite mit ein paar RSS-Feeds oder Blogs aufzupeppen, da ist man wieder bei dem alten Image der Bibliothek: Bibliothek=Buch, Bibliothek=Content Provider. Und diese Provider sind ja am aussterben, wie wir oben gelernt haben. Kein Bedarf mehr.

We conceived of a social library as a library of traditional services enhanced by a set of social tools—wikis, blogs, mashups and podcasts. [But] a social library will not be created by implementing a list of social software features on our current sites. The social Web is being created by opening the doors to the production of the Web, dismantling the current structures and inviting users in to create their content and establish new rules.

Aber Achtung: Die Einmischung von behördlichen Aufsehernaturen wie unsereinem muss mit dem nötigen Fingerspitzengefühl und am besten nach vorherigem persönlichen Kontakt erfolgen, wie der ebenfalls sehr interessante Post des ACRL-Blogs mit dem Titel “What students think of authority figures in Facebook aufzeigt. Eine – zarte Hoffnung auf Chancen zum Mitspielen weckende – Antwort auf die Frage, ob bibliothekarisches Engagement bei Facebook und Co. von der Zielgruppe erwünscht ist:

For the most part, no. I’d much rather they stay out of it. However, I do have one professor who is known for being fairly hip. He’s on Facebook and I have no problem with this because I know he’s not going to abuse that position.

Libraries in Social Networking Software zur grundsätzlichen Frage der bibliothekarischen Beteiligung an Netzwerken wie MySpace, Facebook von Meredith Farkas, einer der Protagonisten der Social Software in Libraries-Bewegung folgendes in netbib geschrieben:

Fazit: Bibliotheken sollten keine Chance ungenutzt lassen, auf sich und ihre Dienste hinzuweisen – und zwar dort, wo sich die Zielgruppe eben aufhält. Und auch für die Art, wie Bibliotheken dort Präsenz zeigen sollen, gibt es Vorschläge: Nicht nur mit bloßen Links auf OPACs und Datenbanken, sondern mit möglichst interaktiven Angebote wie Wunschlisten oder Diskussionsseiten für einzelne Titel. Dann zitiert sie Meredith Farkas:

“I think there is a big difference between “being where our patrons are and “being USEFUL to our patrons where they are”.
