Kaum schlage ich das Januarheft von JMLA (nicht hier sondern hier) auf, stelle ich fest, dass mein Vortrag The Medical Library of the Future: Be prepared for the invisible, den ich auf der INFORUM in Prag gehalten habe, zitiert wird. Smile! Stolz! Brustschwell! Es war im Jahre 2005, gef�hlte 30 Jahre her also – ich konnte mich Null daran erinnern!

Alle meine damaligen Aussagen kann ich zu 100% unterstreichen – bis auf die E-Books, da bin ich mittlerweile doch radikaler.

MLA 2013 federated meeting with 11th International Congress on Medical Librarianship

Dieser Tage bekam ich die erste Ank�ndigung des gemeinsamen MLA/ICML-Kongresses 2013 in Boston (auf der letzten Tagung 2009 in Brisbane wurde der Rhythmus von f�nf- auf vierj�hrig verk�rzt) mit dem Titel “One Health: Information in an Interdependent World”. Der letzte gemeinsame Kongre� war 1995 in Washington (damals unter dem Titel “Health Information for the Global Village”) und es war f�r einen europ�ischen Bibliothekar schon sehr beeindruckend (und wuselig!), die 2.000 oder so Delegierten der MLA-Tagung auf einem Haufen zu sehen. 700 blieben dann f�r die ICML, in der Buchhandlung um die Ecke spielte eine Liveband auf der Empore Santana Jam und Nachts auf dem Bordstein wurde die Zukunft der Bibliothek geplant …

Hier nun die ersten Informationen, gemailt von Rick Ralston, Assistant Director for Library Operations, Indianapolis, in der Liste MLA-International Cooperation Section:

As many of you may have heard, the 2013 MLA annual meeting in Boston will be a federated meeting, that is, in the words of Michael Homan, Co-Chair of NPC ‘13: “of similarly focused health sciences
information organizations encompassing the programming and CE of MLA’13 as the principle cornerstone of the 2013 meeting, but augmented and enriched by the concurrent activities and programs of the 11th International Congress on Medical Librarianship (ICML), and the international conferences of the International Clinical Librarians and the Animal Health Information Specialists”. Committee meetings/first activities: Special meetings (in the U.S. and European), as well as e-mail discussions, took place over the Summer/Fall of 2010 as the program planning committee members were being invited and assembled by the various constituent groups. The first NPC13/ICML11 Program Planning Committee “international meeting” took place via Skype on Tuesday, December 7, 2010. A meeting theme was chosen and a list of possible plenary speakers and meeting tracks was generated. Meeting logistics and a timeline for a first draft of the meeting framework were also discussed. Carla Funk announced that MLA will rent a table at the 2011 IFLA conference in San Juan, Puerto Rico to begin promotion of the 2013 Boston meeting. Meeting theme: One Health: Information in an Interdependent World. The phrase “One Health” used in the context of NPC 2013/ICML11 is meant to encompass not only human and animal health, but also public health, environmental health, climate change, food safety/production, and international policy. The broad definition emphasizes interdisciplinary and international collaboration. The word “information” provides the appropriate connotation for the meeting, and the word “interdependent” underscores global interdependencies in all health related areas. In this context, global means local as well.

Excerpt from Dec. 7, 2010 meeting minutes: The committee discussed possible general meeting “tracks” and confirmed the desire to handle the 2013 meeting as a federated meeting with multiple tracks as was successfully done for ICML’10 in Australia… Carla Funk reminded the committee that it will need to follow developing “hot topics” in the years leading up to the 2013 meeting as possible new tracks. Participants confirmed that the 7th IACHIS and the 6th ICLC are considered separate tracks for the federated 2013 meeting. Ramune Kubilius confirmed that the tracks will likely have significant alignment with MLA Section programming needs and interests and that a mix of 25% ICML-selected papers and 75% Section-selected papers will most likely work.

Continuing Education Grant
Applications due December 1, 2010

The Medical Library Association (MLA) is now accepting applications for the Continuing Education (CE) Grant. The grant can be used to develop one�s knowledge of the theoretical, administrative, or technical aspects of librarianship, and may be used either for MLA courses or for other CE activities. Applicants should have 2+ years of professional library experience. Awards range from $100 to $500 and more than one CE award may be offered in a year. Cunningham Memorial International Fellowship DONE

David A. Kronick Traveling Fellowship

In an attempt to analyze success of the blog and bloggers, I conducted two surveys. One survey was just for the bloggers themselves to determine what strategies, platforms, etc worked best. The results of that blog will be passed on to the 2010 NPC group to help with their blog. The second survey was for everyone who read the annual meeting blog and its intent was to help us see whether our posts were helpful and whether a blog was a good information resource for the annual meeting.

This survey examined the use of social networking tools by the members of the MLA. A follow-up survey was sent out this year. Melissa Rethlefsen presented the data from the surveys on a poster http://posterexperience.com/index.php (#11). 233 MLA members participated in the Digg Deeper with Social Media online course offered this spring by the SNSTF. MLA: Statement on Journal Publishing Ethics

In response to the Elsevier fake journals und anderen Geschichten, the MLA delivered a Statement on Journal Publishing Ethics, worth to read:

In view of recent news reports regarding the publication of an industry-sponsored journal primarily for marketing purposes by the affiliate of a major medical publisher without disclosure of commercial support or publication purpose, the Medical Library Association (MLA) and the Association of Academic Health Sciences Libraries (AAHSL) jointly endorse the need for transparency with regard to publication source and funding. MLA and AAHSL want to emphasize the importance of journal publishers� adherence to the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICJME) policy that all participants in the peer-review and publication process must disclose all relationships that could be viewed as potential conflicts of interest. http://www.icmje.org/index.html – authorship> Notably, the National Library of Medicine has a relevant policy regarding supplements that requires full disclosure of outside sponsorship in order for publications to be indexed in MEDLINE. http://www.nlm.nih.gov/pubs/factsheets/supplements.html
We expect publishers to remain vigilant about revealing sponsorship relationships to uphold and support integrity and honesty in research and the scientific dissemination process.

Ich sehe auch gerade, dass die �bern�chste ICML 2013 in Baltimore, Maryland, USA stattfinden wird. Quasi am Sitz der NLM. Es w�rde mich sehr wundern, wenn es nicht zusammen mit der j�hrlichen MLA Konferenz vom 17.-22.Mai stattfinden wird. Ein solches Zusammentreffen habe ich bereits einmal erlebt, 1995 in Washington, DC, und ich muss sagen, dass die 2.500 MLA-Delegierten beeindruckender waren als die 700 ICML-Teilnehmer.

Ja, die amerikanischen Bibliotheken, uns mal wieder etliche Jahre voraus… Die Electronic Personal Health Record Task Force (nur f�r Mitglieder) hat die folgende Aufgabe:

Electronic personal health records (PHRs) are being developed and promoted to encourage individuals to record their health histories with the goals of enhancing the quality of health care and reducing associated costs. There are many groups looking into PHRs’ feasibility, technical development, application and acceptability. The Medical Library Association (MLA) and the National Library of Medicine (NLM) are jointly charging an Electronic Personal Health Record Task Force with reviewing the current state-of-the-art of PHRs with a main focus on examining how linkages to high quality health information and medical librarians can be provided from within these records.

The charge to the Task Force is to:

* Determine the key players and providers of the various types of electronic personal health records (PHRs) including ones that are independent and/or associated with electronic clinical health systems and make a list of these providers including their contact information.
* Create an inventory of health information resources and provide descriptions and links for PHR developers to include within their record templates. This material should encourage the public to view medical librarians as a source of personal assistance and to use the pre-defined quality Web-based health information resources, especially those offered by the NLM.
* Define what assistance medical librarians can offer PHR users and provide an assistance qualification statement so users know what services to expect when they contact a medical librarian.
* Identify training needs of medical librarians to enable them to support the health information resources contained within PHRs.
* Work with the MLA Health Information Literacy Research Project to implement a modest current awareness/training program for medical librarians. This program should include training on the skills needed to understand the needs of PHR users and provide them with customized support.
* Prepare a final report to be presented to the MLA Board of Directors and the administration of the National Library of Medicine.

Was hat die Taskforce bisher getan:

- Created a working definition of an electronic PHR Gathered information on electronic personal health record products
- Entered the information in a database created at NLM
- Submitted an abstract for a poster presentation at the MLA ‘08 Annual Meeting
- Drafted a plain-language assistance statement to be used in PHRs that willpoint consumers to the services of medical librarians and to sites selected bymedical librarians to help them find quality health information
- Published anupdate in the June/July 2007 issue of the MLA News. For the remainder of the association year, the task force will explore ways to train librarians regarding PHRs, prepare the poster for presentation, analyze the data collected on PHRs, and identify PHR partners willing to adopt the assistance statement and work with medical librarians.

2007 MLA Benchmarking Survey – auch f�r deutsche Bibbliotheken!

Einer der gro�en Vorteile der Mitgliedschaft in der MLA ist – nein, nicht das Abo von JMLA – sondern das Health Sciences Library Statistics & Benchmarking. Heute ist der letzte Abgabetag f�r den aktuellen 2007 MLA Benchmarking Survey, 280 Bibliotheken aus dem In- und Ausland haben sich bereits daran beteiligt (anscheinend auch f�r Nicht-Mitglieder offen). Man kann f�r wenig Geld die Daten der vergangenen Jahre kaufen (wenn man teilnimmt reduziert sich der Preis weiter). Dann gibt es noch ein paar Medical Librarians� Success Stories with MLA Benchmarking Data. Ich habe dieses Jahr aus Neugier einfach mal dran teilgenommen, es war relativ simple, den Onlinefragebogen auszuf�llen, komfortabler und leichter als die DBS (ok, ich habe es auch nicht so genau genommen).

Nachdem die Hochschulbibliotheksstatistik Medizin (mit Daten einiger weniger Bibliotheken von 1996-2004) ja quasi tot (oder totgeboren ) ist, erscheint mir dies mittlerweile ein gangbarer Weg des Benchmarking, auch f�r deutsche Bibliotheken – besser w�re allerdings, wenn die AGMB die Sache �bernehmen und auf professionelle F��e stellen w�rde. Da wir froh sein k�nnen, wenn sich �berhaupt jemand die Vorstandsarbeit “antut” (ok, es macht auch irre viel Spa�! ), w�rde ich auch etwas f�r ein solches professionelles Benchmarking bezahlen wollen. MLA Umfrage – Weiterentwicklung eines Verbandes

Die Medical Library Association hat eine sehr interessante Umfrage ins Netz gestellt. Sie kann von jedermann beantwortet werden, obwohl sie sich nur an Mitglieder richtet. Trotz der 54 (!) Fragen lohnt es sich – gerade f�r Bibliotheksverb�nde – mal dort reinzuschauen. Es gibt einen Haufen von Anregungen f�r Weiterentwicklungen, da die MLA durch das Feedback ihre Zukunft neu gestalten m�chte. Wie vom neuen MLA Board-Mitglied T.Scott Plutchak angek�ndigt, m�chte man Social Software Tools zur Kommunikation mit den Mitgliedern benutzen. Das scheint nun Formen anzunehmen, wie der aktuellen Newsletter MLA-Focus zeigt. Der Pr�sident Mark E. Funk hat seit vorgestern einen eigenen Blog und damit sol es nicht bleiben:

MLA’s Task Force on Social Networking Software is charged with investigating issues surrounding the implementation of blogs, wikis, RSS feeds, and other social networking tools for MLA and its units. This includes creating guidelines for technologies and ways MLA members and units can best use them. Using Web 2.0 services, the association has the potential to engage MLA members in new ways for MLA business, knowledge sharing, and collegial connections. The task force would like to hear from you! Please take a few minutes to fill out a short survey. We will review the data carefully and base our recommendations on what MLA members tell us about their social networking needs. The online survey should only take a few minutes to completeplease respond by August 10, 2007.

Aus dem Technical Bulletin der NLM: The NLM exhibit booth at the Annual Meeting of the Medical Library Association featured theater presentations to bring users up-to-date on some of the Library’s products and services. This year, the presentations were recorded using Adobe� Connect� and we are pleased to offer them with voice recordings and captions (separate transcripts where captioning not available). In addition, PowerPoint� (PPT) slides for each presentation are available.

To listen to the voice recordings and view the captions you will need the latest version of Flash� Player (download for free from the Adobe Web site). The PPT presentations were created in Microsoft� PowerPoint. If you do not have PowerPoint, you can download the Microsoft Office PowerPoint viewer.

An der MLA teilnehmen?

Ich denke ja immer mal wieder dran, an der gr��ten (und wichtigsten?) Konferenz f�r Medizinbibliothekare teilzunehmen, dem MLA-Kongre� in den USA. Man k�nnte dort z.B. einige Blogger treffen. Aber es gibt ja auch noch die deutsche Konferenz der AGMB und die europ�ische der EAHIL und dann alle vier Jahre die ICML. Und irgendwann ist auch Schlu� mit dem Reisekostenetat.

Die neue EU-Vereinbarung mit den USA hat mir nun die Entscheidung leichter gemacht: Ein Transatlantikflug gen�gt und meine pers�nlichen Daten (inkl. Kreditkartennummer?) werden 15 Jahre lang von den USA gespeichert. 15 Jahre lang – das mu� man sich mal auf der Zunge zergehen lassen! Hier an der Uni machen die sich schon in die Hose, wenn sie Verbindungsdaten l�nger als 2 Tage speichern sollen – was u.a. die Personalisierung von mi�br�uchlichen Downloads verhindert.

Neuigkeiten �ber das neue Open Access Gesetz des US-Senats, das laut Peter Suber [SOAN 1/2/2006] exzellent w�re, da es explizit verlangt, dass Forschungsergebnisse der �ffentlichkeit frei zur Verf�gung gestellt werden. Haben wir hier die Keimzelle einer Publishing-Revolution vorliegen? Eingebettet ist diese OA-Kiste in ein neues Institut namens American Center for Cures (www.acc.nih.gov), whose primary mission would be to translate fundamental research into therapies. 5 gro�e Bibliotheksverb�nde (AALL, ALA, ARL, MLA, SLA) zeigen sich ebenfalls angetan.

Von T. Scott Plutchak �ber seine 24 Editorials in JMLA. Editorials sind die K�r, aber man ist sich nie sicher, ob diese (ephemeren Gedanken) gelesen werden. Mir kam gerade der Gedanke, dass Weblogs wie z.B. medinfo auch als eine ununterbrochene Folge von Editorials gesehen werden k�nnen und deshalb f�r einen Editorial-Schreiber nicht verwunderlich ist, dass sie soviel Spa� machen.

Es gibt wohl ein “Remote Access Pricing” f�r UpToDate, wenn man es auch via Modem/VPN zug�nglich machen m�chte. Man kann das Verbot also umgehen, wenn man das n�tige Kleingeld daf�r hat. Die Begr�ndung erinnert mich doch stark an die um ihre Profite f�rchtenden Zeitschriftenverleger.
FirstConsult: Of course, we’re not huge fans of Elsevier; we might be stuck between a rock and a hard place in terms of pricing/licensing models if choosing between UpToDate and First Consult (we only have four simultaneous licenses for MD Consult at McGill because the pricing was so exorbitant)
NLM: NIH hat ein NIHMS genanntes Manuscript Submission System herausgebracht. Die NLM denkt auch �ber interaktive Publikationen (z.B. Audiodateien) nach und sucht kooperationsbereite Verleger.

Es hat mich ja schon immer gest�rt, dass MEDIBIB-L, die beste medizinbibliothekarische Mailingliste (ok, die zweitbeste ), zuviel Traffic hatte, als dass sie sich vern�nftig lesen liesse. Meine Subscription ruhte deshalb seit 1993 immer mal wieder. Jetzt gibt es aber eine Alternative: Zusammen mit der ‘Admina’ (Thanks, Kate!) habe ich diese Liste mal bei Gmane eingetragen: MEDLIB-L bei Gmane. Erlaubt RSS-Feeds und threaded HTTP (s.o.).

In der Februar-Ausgabe 2005 (nur f�r Mitglieder) der MLA News wird ein neuer Chefredakteur f�r das Journal of the Medical Library Association (JMLA) gesucht. Die Nachfolge von T. Scott Plutchak mu� im Mai 2005 zu Heft 2 angetreten werden. Im Ausschreibungstext finden wir folgendes �ber das JMLA: Manuscript submissions to the JMLA have climbed steadily over the past five years, peaking at seventy-six in 2003. Twenty-one percent of the articles submitted in 2003 were not accepted. The importance and prestige of the JMLA was confirmed in a recent study ranking the value of more than 70 refereed library and information science research journals in supporting promotion and tenure decisions. The JMLA ranked 20, with a rating of 3.58 out of 5.

It appears that electronic publishing may well reduce the stranglehold of monopolies and, at least for a time, restore a freer free market…. By working with faculty colleagues, we can play a role in controlling the supply of resources to various publishing vehicles as well as the way they are accessed.
