The Electronic Collections Department

The Head of Electronic Collections will lead and be an active
member of a growing Electronic Collections Department,
communicating regularly with library staff at many levels and in
many departments. As appropriate, this department leads,
coordinates and/or supports the systemwide collecting and
conversion of electronic and digital collections through the Yale
University Library. The YUL is actively acquiring online
resources including journals, databases, online books, and other
online resources, and is exploring archiving electronic content,
and collaborating in converting traditional formats to digital
formats. The collections funds spent on electronic resources have
increased by more than 30% a year
; the current number of
full-text serial titles is over 63,000; the number of databases
exceeds 1,100; and the number of online books is over 800,000.
Expansive growth of e-resources continues. Electronic Collections
staff work together as a team to provide appropriate services to
a large library system as appropriate, in centralized and
decentralized aspects.

General Purpose

The Director of Electronic Collections provides vision,
managerial leadership and knowledge in support of collections
development for e-resources. Working closely with subject
specialists and a broad range of other library staff, users, and
suppliers, this position leads a dynamic team and provides policy
and other significant guidance to the entire Library system with
a complex array of needs and service patterns.

Serves as a resource for public, technical and/or administrative
services. Plans, organizes, communicates, and administers the
programs of service to users and potential users of the Library’s
materials and services. Administers programs covering a range of
library operations. Administers, supervises and plans for
operations of a department. Defines priorities for use of library
resources and/or performance of library functions. Contributes to
long range departmental and library planning. Evaluates
departmental and library program effectiveness. Develops new
services, procedures, standards and/or policies


This position facilitates access to collections and services of a
complex, multi-faceted research/academic library through direct
contact with library patrons and/or through the development of
collections and their bibliographic identification. Contributes
to improvements in the efficiency and effectiveness of the
scholarly collections system. Develops, implements, and/or
administers department/library policy and procedures which
provides access to the Yale University Library collections and
which allows for the cooperative exchange of resources between
Yale and other Universities and information networks.
Participates in and contributes to library long-term planning and
is professionally active in library, scholarly and/or academic
organizations. Represents the library and the University in the
academic and professional community by serving on various
committees and task forces.

This position reports to the AUL for Collections and
International Programs and is responsible for overall management
of the activities of Electronic Collections Department (including
international e-collections), with a total of 9.5 FTE plus
student support.

Graduate degree in Library and/or Information Science from an ALA
accredited program or its equivalent in experience and related
education and five years of professional experience and

For appointment to LIV requires eight years of professional
experience and accomplishments; appointment to LV requires twelve
years of professional experience and accomplishment.

Requires: experience managing team processes including
establishment of goals, work priorities and timelines; ability to
work collegially with teams and individuals in diverse
environments; supervisory and budget management skills; diplomacy
or skill at consensus building; experience with management of a
collection development program, including prior experience of
working with serials across formats; knowledge of the current
scholarly communication and user behavior trends; demonstrated
problem solving skills with a commitment to innovation,
creativity and excellence.; proven customer service skills,
flexibility, and experience coordinating projects; ability to
build partnerships and consensus and to promote the benefits of
change in an academic culture that often values ambiguity and
historic precedent; and the demonstrated ability to understand
technical environments and database design, in order to work with
technical staff about assorted e-resources issues (ERM,
authentication, archiving, and so on).

Ability to communicate effectively through both oral and written
expression. Well developed knowledge of electronic information
creation and management. Excellent organizational, analytical and
planning skills. Developed managerial and financial management
skills. May require knowledge of appropriate foreign languages.
